We flew out of Don Mueang on Saturday morning for a quick weekend trip to Mae Sot. Although our flight didn’t leave until 8am we arrived at the airport and were checked in by 6.30am, partly because we didn’t expect the taxi from our apartment in central Bangkok to be so quick and it always seems better to overestimate travel time in Bangkok.
But what it did mean was that we had plenty of time to wander around the airport to see if we could find coffee, which isn’t that difficult. There are plenty of places to buy coffee from a cup of instant at the Mapas Mini Mart to the Starbucks. But I’ve never been a real fan of Starbucks and a cup of instant is really only a last resort. So we were surprised to find the little cafe – Hanuman hidden under the stairs in the Domestic terminal check in area. After you have past through the check in counters and before you go through security turn left and keep walking towards the sign that says ‘Noodles’ (head towards the international terminal) and you will find Hanuman.
At any airport you generally expect you are going to have to pay a lot for food and drink but we were pleasantly surprised that the coffee at Hanuman was relatively inexpensive only 69 Baht for any type of hot espresso coffee. I enjoyed a delicious Caramel Macchiato.
Hanuman had a great vibe, sitting there I easily forgot I was sitting at an airport coffee shop. The lighting was not too bright, they had music quietly playing and comfortable bar stools. Not only did they serve good hot coffee, they had a range of ice coffees, frappes and a selection of food. But what caught my eye was the Hong Kong Waffles, something that I’d never tried and they sounded yum. You were able to choose a couple of toppings and I was really tempted to try ham and chocolate but ended up getting chocolate and raisin. I wasn’t disappointed they were delicious.
So if you find yourself at Don Mueang on the hunt for delicious coffee and an interesting snack check out Hanuman.
