Nong Khai and the Mighty Mekong

Travel Theme: Rivers

Nong Khai is my favourite town in north east Thailand.  It is a gateway in to Laos, it sits on the Mekong River and it feels small and quaint but still with lots of delicious food options.

We’ve visited Nong Khai a few times over the past few years and I always feel like it just relaxes me.  We always stay at the same place (Mut Mee Guesthouse), situated next to the Mekong River in a tranquil garden.  It is the kind of guesthouse where you can relax and always end up staying longer than planned (or at least wanting to).

The Mekong flows from China through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. We’ve enjoyed seeing it from a lot of different places but my favourite so far is Nong Khai. On a Saturday night the riverside becomes home to walking street market, which fills with people, cute souvenirs, and delicious food. Wandering through the market, watching the sun set over the river was beautiful.

If you are looking for a perfect spot to explore the Mekong river then Nong Khai would be a great place to start. From there you could take a slow journey through north east Thailand stopping at smaller towns along the Mekong and seeing a glimpse of rural Thailand life.
